The Large Hadron Collidor Sep.010.2008

Ok, the LHC didn't create a black hole, but the 10th of September was only a test run. The protones still didn't smash into each other, so we can live a bit longer and practice our kicks for a few more weeks.
For those who don't know what I am talking about:
CERG built a 27 km ring ( between France and Switzerland ) to accelerate protones to light speed, smash them into each other and see what's inside. The impact will be with double light speed.
Today they just tried if the machine works when they send protones one way. ( no big bang yet )
They are trying to proof the existence of the higgs boson, so that they can explain how elementary particles acquire properties such as mass. If that works, soon we will be able to control mass and maybe we will me able to fly around without pollution.
They don't know what will happen exactly, but the expectations are high. After all the project was planned over 20 years and the constructions time was 7 years. This is the biggest, most expensive and probably the most significant experiment in our history.
Find more info on wikipedia.
They say that a spot 100000 times hotter than the sun will be created for a moment, and that conditions like shortly after the big bang will be reconstructed. Steven Hawkins says that there will be tiny black holes, which will fall apart within less than a second.
Well, he has a theory after which black holes die faster if they have less mass. If a black hole appears in the LHC and dies shortly after,
he will probably be the next nobel price winner.

Risks:
Again, nobody knows what will happen, and if mother earth still exists after the 21st of october, many of us will be assuaged ;)
Of course the community of scientists say that there are no risks at all. But that's the standard answer when a scientist wants to experiment. An experiment is an experiment and they can't promise what they don't know. If you google around and look up LHC on youtube, you will find hundreds of worst case scenarios from black holes, and scenarios where the earth turns into a second sun to a new mass that throws the earth out of its orbit or where a new universe swaps over us.

Well, we will see.
Or maybe not, because they say whatever happens, it will happen very very fast.

Interesting.
A hacker group sabotaged the LHC's official website and sent personal messages to the scientists. ( they were accused to be the destroyers of the universe ). I hope CERG did a better job on the LHC than on the security system of their website.

My opinion:
Why not try. Sooner or later the climate change or a meteoroid or a cloverfield monster will kill us all.
We have to anticipate the cloverfield monster ! LOL
Thousands of years ago a stone was dangerous. 1 person could get hurt. Then you were were able to kill many people with one and the same sword. 100 years ago on explosion killed 50 people with at once and nuclear fission can destroy an entire city.
Maybe soon we will have "THE POWER" to destroy the entire universe.
Ok... A bit off topic, but this was too interesting.
Had to share my thoughts.

Good bye and best regards.
