Technical description: Handstand Hop - Gymnastics

  • Lean forward very far and initiate a handstand like explained in the handstand tutorial.
Keep in mind that your arms, your upper body and your right leg have to stay lined up
    and move as one unit.
When you do the handstand with a hop, it's even more important that you
keep your upper body firm and your abs contracted slightly.
If you would hollow you back, you would not be able to hop very well.
Place a judo mat ( or another appr. 4 cm high mat ) about 10 cm from where
your hands will touch the floor.
Don't place the mat first and then reach for the spot 10 cm before the mat.
The distance from where you start, to the spot to where your hands touch the floor,
always has to be the same.
( no matter if you will do a hop, a turn or a roll afterwards )
So do a normal handstand first, remember where your hands touched the floor and
then place the mat about 10 cm from that spot.
  • Important: The right leg, the upper body, the arms and the head have to form a perfect straight line. So don't hollow your back and don't bend your knees.
When your hands touch the floor, push yourself off as soon as possible.
Don't let your hands rest on the floor. ( imagine your hands as giant springs )
The push has to be created with the hands and the shoulders,
but not by bending elbows or back.
The rest comes from the legs.
When you push off with your hands, bring your feet together and bring your
legs to vertical level. But don't whip your legs too far or bend your knees !
    Don't hollow your back !
  • Hop onto the mat and keep your posture perfect straight.
Try to hold the handstand for a few seconds.
Hopping wide is better than hopping high.
( careful with your fingers )
After the handstand you can try a turn, a bridge or a front roll, or
just put your legs back down.
