Handstand Turn - Gymnastics
In this lesson you will learn how to turn around in a handstand.
You have to learn the handstand turn before you learn acrobatic
flips with rotations.
Start practicing this technique right after the normal handstand.

Technical description: Handstand Turn - Gymnastics
- Go into a handstand like explained in the HANDSTAND LESSON.
Summary: Keep right leg, your trunk and arms in line.
Extend arms and legs totally. Keep your abs contracted slightly. Don't hollow your back.
- The turn should be done in 2 steps.
First put your right hand on the left side of your left hand. ( turn right hand 180 degrees - see illustration )
This might not feel comfortable at the beginning, so at the beginning you can also start off adjusting your left hand first.
However... Turning around with only 2 steps is recommended.
Turn your trunk and your legs at the same time. Don't start twisting your trunk and let your legs follow.
The entire body should turn around as one unit, while the right hand changes its position.
When the left hand follows, the turn should already be finished.
Keep your legs closed, vertical and totally extended.
- Adjust the left hand and bring your hands back to shoulder width.
- Go back down like if you would go down from a
normal handstand without turn.
Left leg goes down first. Legs and arms extended. Hands up.
Trainer advice: Handstand Turn - Gymnastics
- You can either initiate the turn shortly before your legs reach vertical level, or stay in a stable handstand
for a few seconds and then turn around fast.
- The instruction above is for a 180 degree turn with 2 steps.
The 180° turn can also be done with 3 steps. ( adjusting the left hand a bit before you start turning around )
- Once you can do the 180° handstand turn, you can try the 360° turn.
The 360° turn ideally is done with 4 steps.
