Capoeira Hand Spin - Au Giratoria
This video shows
how to do a capoeira hand spin (Au Giratoria) with a full rotation. The au giratoria is also called spin wheel 360, because in the second half of the move, you spin on your palm. Before you try this, you should learn how to do a normal au giratoria (with a 90 to 180 degree rotation). Find animated
capoeira instructions at capoeira main, and for more videos, click here.
Execution
- Start from the ginga and turn down sideways like if you were going to do a normal au giratoria with a half rotation.
- Plant one hand first and kick up the other leg.
- Then kick up the other leg, and plant the second hand next to hand one (very close). The way how you plant the second hand is where things become different. Close your fingers and don't let your finger tips touch the ground. You are going to spin on the lower 2/3 of your palm. Contract your forearm muscles and spin. If you want to spin very fast, you can put hand one on top of hand two.
- If you close your legs, you will spin faster, but please don't try fast spins right away! I recommend you just spin a few degrees and then go back down.
- Go back to the ginga as soon as one leg touches the ground.
Advice
- I recommend you practice the capoeira hand spin on grass. Don't practice this on judo mats, because they are too sticky to slide on your palms.
- Hands spins are also performed in breakdance.
- In capoeira, the idea is not to spin fast and often. You should be able to kick your opponent as you spin. Traditionally, the hand spin shouldn't be done with a full rotation, because you can't see your opponent the whole time.
- Don't try the capoeira hand spin if your handstand isn't very stable.
- Don't practice the au giratoria if you are having wrist, elbow, shoulder or back problems.
- Be careful with this move! Take it easy!
