Capoeira - Au Uma Mao
Learn how to do a one-handed capoeira cartwheel. In portuguese this skill is called "Au Uma Mao" (lit: Wheel One Hand). The one-handed cartwheel is often done as a preparation for the aerial (cartwheel without hands). Some people also do the one-handed cartwheel because they haven't learned the
capoeira aerial yet. Find more capoeira video instructions here, and more detailed capoeira lessons at capoeira main.
Execution
- Start from the ginga.
- Lean down to one side and keep looking at your opponent.
- Put one one hand on the floor and keep the other hand in front of your face. You should be able to block a coming attack while you are upside down. At the beginning it's ok if you just focus on your technique, but later you should try to watch your opponent the whole time. BTW, if you lean down to the right, you should plant your left hand, and if you lean down to the left, plant your right hand.
- Kick your legs up and extend your elbow.
- Go back to the ginga and don't lower your guard.
Advice
- Warm up and stretch your shoulders before you try the one-handed capoeira cartwheel.
- Do a couple of normal cartwheels before you try this.
- Do normal cartwheels and a few Au Uma Mao's before you practice the capoeira aerial.
