Capoeira Volta Ao Mundo

This video shows how to do a Volta Ao Mundo in capoeira. The volta ao mundo (lit: Around the World) is basically like a gymnastic front walkover but sideways and with a twist. It actually looks quite difficult but is a lot easier then the front walkover in artistic gymnastics. For more information about capoeira, check out the animated capoeira section.

Execution

  • Practice every new capoeira technique from the ginga.
  • Step forward with your left leg.
  • Then plant you left leg on the floor and start moving your right leg like if your were doing a wushu back sweep, but higher.
  • Kick your right leg 45° up and and plant both hands exactly where your right foot was before. The left hand points straight forward and the right hands points slightly to the right.
  • Arch your back and lift your hip with the momentum of your leg.
  • The right leg goes back to the floor first and the let hand stays on the floor longer.
  • Push your left leg and your hip forward-up at the end.

Advice

  • Keep in mind that in capoeira you should always look at your opponent as long as possible.
  • Most capoeiristas only practice one side of the volta ao mundo.
  • Warm up and stretch your back, your shoulders and your legs before you try this capoeira wheel.
  • Exercise: Try to to 3 volta ao mundo's in a row.
