Capoeira Front Kick - Bencao

This video shows how to do a front kick in capoeira. In Portuguese, this kick is called "Bencao". There are two different front kicks in capoeira. One where you kick with the ball of the foot (Ponteira), and one where you kick with the sole of the foot or the heel (Bencao => shown here). For more capoeira videos, click here, and for more detailed instructions, check out capoeira main.

Execution

  • When you practice new capoeira techniques, always start from the ginga.
  • Lift one knee towards your chest and keep at least one hand in front of your head. Your kicking leg has to be bent as you lift the knee.
  • Then extend your leg in a straight line and kick with the heel or the sole of the foot. Push your hips forward at the same time (see video). The bencaos is usually aimed hip height or above.
  • Then pull your foot straight back and go back to your ginga.

Advice

  • Practice both sides of the bencao.
  • Keep looking at your opponent the whole time.
  • Always warm up and stretch your legs before you practice any capoeira kicks/jumps.
  • Take turns kicking and escaping with a training partner.
