Capoeira Spin Kick - Chapa com Giro

This video shows how to do a spinning kick in capoeira (Chapa com Giro or Chapa Giratoria). The spinning kick is like a side kick with a 360° turn. What's important about this kick is that you keep looking at your opponent as long as possible. Make sure you turn your head fast so that you don't lose sight of your opponent's actions. The armada is very similar to the chapa com giro. But when you do an armada, your toes point up, while when you do a chapa com giro, you kick like if you were doing a side kick (foot parallel to the floor). Execution

  • Start from the ginga and then step to the side. For most people the right chapa com giro is easier then the left side of this kick. (right chapa com giro = kicking with the right leg)
  • At first you turn away from your opponent. Turn your upper body first and keep looking at your opponent as long as possible.
  • Then turn your head, move your hands to the other side (because your guard should always be up) and lift your knee.
  • Throw a flying side kick and let go (spin).
  • Then go back to the ginga smoothly.

Advice

  • At the beginning it's easier if you just do a side kick with a turn at the beginning.
  • You should kick over hip height.
  • Warm up your hips and stretch your hamstrings before you try this kick.
  • You can also practice the chapa com giro in a partner exercise (take turns kicking and escaping)
