Chapa Lateral - Capoeira Side Kick
This video shows how to do a capoeira side kick (Chapa Lateral). Side kicks are done in all kinds of martial arts. Find more detailed
capoeira instructions at capoeira main, and for more videos, click here.
Execution
- Start from the ginga and step to the side.
- Then lift the knee of the other leg sideways (towards your chest).
- Thrust your foot sideways towards your opponent and keep your guard up. You should kick with the entire foot or the heel, not with the ball of the foot. Twist on the ball of the foot of the standing leg and make sure your kicking foot is parallel to the floor (toes should not point up).
- Then pull your leg back the same way and go back to the ginga.
Advice
- Always warm up and stretch before you practice any kicks.
- At the beginning you can practice the chapa lateral without ginga.
- Practice the side kick with a training partner. One kicks, the other one escapes.
