Capoeira Kip Video
This video shows how to do a kip up "Kip" in capoeira. The kip up is seen in a variety of
martial arts styles. In wushu for example it is called "Li Yu Da Ting". Click here for more capoeira videos or go back to the animated capoeira section.
Execution
- Sit down with your legs closed.
- Plant your left hand more than one shoulder width behind your feet and make sure your fingers point to your heels.
- Then push your hips up, and throw your right hand back over-head
- Bend your chin towards your chest and plant your right hand next to your head. Both hands should be next to your ears now. If you would do a macaco, you would push up your hips harder and not bend your head down.
- Bend your elbows and roll back onto your upper back. Keep your hips from the ground but make sure the back of your head touches the floor. Swing your legs close to your face. In capoeira you don't have to keep your knees fully extended.
- Then whip your legs back up and push your hands down. Don't lift your head too early. Actually push your head down as long as possible. The leg whip will help you elevate your hips along with your upper body and your head.
- When your legs pass vertical level, bend your knees and land on both feet at the same time.
- To make the landing easier, throw your hands forward and separate your feet.
Advice
- Don't roll back too far.
- Use the capoeira kip as a warm up for the macaco.
