Capoeira Meia Lua - Half Moon Kick

This video shows how to do a Meia Lua (lit: Half Moon). The meia lua is one of the first capoeira kicks you should learn. It's basically something like the wushu inside circle kick but slower and you bend the knee at the end. Click here for more instructional capoeira videos and don't forget to check out the animated capoeira section.

Execution

  • Start from the ginga. Step back, then step to the middle and then lift the leg you had in front. If you last ginga step was back with your left leg, step forward again (so that your feet are parallel) and kick with your right leg.
  • Kick in a circular motion and keep your knee pretty straight.
  • Bend the knee at the end and then go back to your ginga.

Advice

  • Practice both sides of this kick.
  • Keep looking straight to your opponent.
  • Partner exercise: Start from the ginga, face to face with a training partner.
Every 2 to 4 steps one of you kicks and the other one escapes. (esquiva)
  • Stretch your legs before you practice any capoeira kicks and jumps.
