Capoeira Kick - Meia Lua de Compasso

This video shows how to do a Meia Lua de Compasso. Lit: "Half Moon Compass". This capoeira kick is nothing like the normal meia lua. While the normal meia lua is a very simple circular kick, the meia lua de compasso is a circular heel kick with a full turn combined with an escape. Since it combines the two most important elements of capoeira, it is considered one of the most important/basic kicks. Execution

  • Start from the ginga.
  • Then bend back down to escape an attack but keep looking to your opponent as long as possible. The purpose of this bend is not only to escape a coming attack, but also to create enough torque from the sudden pivot in your hip area. Later on, you will use this torque to let your kicking leg flash around.
  • Put one or both hands on the ground and look at your opponent as long as possible.
  • Then let your kicking leg go and turn on the ball of the foot of your standing leg. There should be enough torque in your core now to just let your foot fly around. This works a little like the wushu back sweep. First, you create torch and then you let go. Kick heel first and preferable over hip height. If you escape to the left, kick with the left leg and if you escape to the right, kick with the right leg.
  • You will have to turn your head at this point. Make sure you don't lose eye contact too long.
  • Then go back to your ginga or escape from your opponent's counter attack.

Advice

  • "Meia Lua" stands for half moon and the word "Compasso" stands for compass => because this kick involves a 360° turn.
  • Practice both sides of this capoeira kick.
  • Keep eye contact as long as possible.
  • This breaks the whole movement, but as an exercise, you can try to break the kick into 2 parts. Go from ginga to escape (hold 2 seconds) and then kick and go back to the ginga.
  • Partner exercise: Start with a meia lua de compasso. Your opponent escapes with the torque part of the meia lua de compasso and then attacks you with the same kick. Take turns. Do 10 to 20 kicks in a row.
  • Stretch your legs before you practice any capoeira kicks.
