Capoeira Negativa

This video shows how to do a capoeira nagativa da regional, which is the most common form of the negativa. The negativa (lit: Negative) is a capoeira technique used to escape from low and medium kicks. You basically lie down supporting yourself with one hand and one leg. Since the negativa is used to escape from kicking attacks, your opponent always stands on one leg when you apply it. That's why it makes sense to counter-attack with a "Negativa Derrubando" (Negative & Break Down). Click here for more capoeira videos and don't forget to check out the animated capoeira section.

Execution

  • Start from the ginga.
  • Extend one leg and bend down on the other.
  • Bend your upper body down to the floor and support yourself with one hand. Go as close as possible to the floor and keep looking at your opponent. One hand should be used to protect the head, the other hand should be planted on the floor. At the beginning you can put both hands on the floor (this way the negativa is easier to balance - see video). If you extend your right leg, you bend your upper body to the right and support yourself on the right hand. If you extend you left leg, bend to the left and support yourself on the left hand.
  • Then stand back up and go back to the ginga.
  • If you want to do a negativa derrumbando, hook the foot of your extended leg around your opponent's ankle and make him lose balance when you stand up.

Advice

  • Practice both sides of the capoeira negativa.
  • At the beginning it's ok to support yourself with both hands, but later you should use your front hand to protect your head.
  • Go as close as possible to the floor but don't lie down. In capoeira only your hands and your feet are allowed to touch the floor.
  • This variation of the negativa is also called Negativa da Regional. The negativa da angola is slightly different.
