Capoeira Tornado Kick - Parafuso

This video shows how to do a "Parafuso" in capoeira, which is pretty much the same thing as the wushu whirlwind kick (tornado kick). In capoeira you are supposed to do this kick with one step from the ginga, while in wushu you have a long, straight runup. Most capoeiristas only do the parafuso from the right leg. If you jump from the right leg, you should land on the right leg or at least on both legs at the same time. Execution

  • Start from the ginga and step to the right.
  • Then step to the left with your right leg, or step back to the middle and then step with your right foot in front of your left foot. You are doing this because you want to jump off your right leg. Also turn your right foot to the left. Look at your opponent as long as possible.
  • Then swing up your left leg and jump off your right leg. Swing your arms at the same time and turn as you jump up. You can bend your left leg (swinging leg) in the air.
  • Kick your right leg over hip height and land on your right leg or on both legs at the same time. At the beginning it's ok if you land on the left leg.
  • Go back to the ginga smoothly.

Advice

  • Most people jump from the right leg. Only few people can do the parafuso from the left leg.
  • In Chinese martial arts, this kick is called whirlwind kick (xuan feng jiao). The main differences are that in wushu you have to extend your kicking leg, twist vertically and slap the sole of your kicking foot in mid-air. BTW, in wushu, there are also 540 and 720 variations of this kick.
