Capoeira - Rabo de Arraia
This video shows how to do a circular capoeira heel kick with one hand on the floor. In Portuguese, this move is called Rabo de Arraia. Rabo de Arraia is a strong name in
capoeira, because over time, different capoeira schools gave out the same name for different techniques. At some point, more than 7 techniques had the same name. In most schools, the Rabo de Arrai is a Meia Lua de Compasso. For more detailed capoeira instructions, check out capoeira main. For more capoeira videos, click here.
Execution
- This is how the rabo de arrai is done with the right leg. For the left side of this kick, simply do the whole thing the other way around.
- Start from the left side of the ginga (where both legs are in line).
- Step to the middle with your front leg and keep looking at your opponent.
- Bend down and to the right and then plant your left hand on the floor.
- With enough tension in your waist, release your right leg and let go. Kick (with your heel) in a circular motion and twist on the ball of your foot. Make sure you turn you head fast so that you don't look away from your opponent very long.
- Then go back to the ginga, walk a few steps and repeat.
Advice
- Always warm up and stretch before you practice any capoeira kicks.
- Kick over hip height and extend both legs.
