Capoeira Rasteia - Sweep

This video shows how to do a Rasteia, which is basically a capoeira front sweep. The rasteia is one of the techniques that actually defines capoeira, because it combines its most important principles; escape and attack => You tuck under your opponent's medium or high kick (for example an armada) and then sweep his standing leg with your instep. Execution

  • Start from the ginga.
  • Tuck under your opponent's kick and bend down on one leg.
  • Then hook the instep of your other leg around your opponent's ankle and plant your hands on the floor.
  • Make sure you keep looking at your opponent.
  • Turn around and bring your head very close to the ground, so that you can see your opponent's standing leg from between your own legs (upside down). Turn and also use your hips in order to sweep your opponent.
  • Stand up and go back to your ginga.
  • Ideally you would sweep your opponent in the direction of his kick.

Advice

  • Practice both sides of the rasteia.
  • You are not supposed to kick into your opponents achilles tendon. Sweep him, but please don' t break his leg!
  • The rasteira is usually used as a defense for circular kicking attacks like the meia lua de compasso or the capoeira armada.
  • Variations:
    • Rasteira em Pé
This version of the capoeira rasteira is much faster -> Designed for quicker attacks like the capoeira roundhouse kick - martelo. Simply don't go down that far in order to hook your instep around your opponent's standing leg.
    • Rasteira de Costas
Spinning capoeira sweep following the motion of a meia lua de compasso. You actually stop your front leg after an initial turn and then sweep your opponent with the heel or the calf of your other leg.
    • Rasteira de Mao
"Mao" = "Hand" => Rastiera with hand.
