Muay Thai Footwork - Moving Forward

How to skip forward in muay thai. Before you move on to the punches, kicks, knees and elbows strikes, you have to learn the muay thai fighting stance and basic footwork. Click here to view this as interactive instruction. For more muay thai videos, click here. This instruction was created in cooperation with Muay Thai Santai.

Execution

  • Start from your muay thai fighting stance and keep your guard up, your chin down and stand on the balls of your feet. Don't move yet if your fighting stance is not 100% right.
  • Step forward with the front leg so that your stance becomes bigger.
  • Then let your back leg follow so that you close your fighting stance again. Move on the balls of your feet. Move quick.
  • Also make sure you don't align your legs with every step. When you look at your stance from the front (or in a mirror) you feet should remain about 1 shoulder width apart.

Advice

  • A lot of people lean forward too much. Keep in mind that you should be able to block with your front shin at any time.
  • Ask your muay thai coach to correct you. Practice your footwork in front of a mirror.
