Muay Thai Cut Kick

This video shows how to do a muay thai cut kick. In most gyms this kick is actually called roundhouse kick, but in thai, this kick is called เตะตรง (te trong), and the exact translation for that is "Cut Kick". However, the cut kick is also a roundhouse kick variation. Cut Kicks always go to the bottom of the leg. This is a defensive technique you apply when your opponent puts all his weight on one leg or stands on one leg. For example when he leans forward too much or when he throws a high kick. The main difference to the roundhouse kick is that you usually flex your ankle as you kick. Low roundhouse kicks to the opponent's thigh are also called cut kick. But since that's just like a lower version of the oblique kick, you should check out the oblique kick instruction. For more muay thai videos, click here. This instruction was created in cooperation with Muay Thai Santai.

Execution

  • Start from the muay thai fighting stance.
  • Make sure you don't stand on the heel of your front leg. Stand on the ball of the foot. Don't bend your knee too much as you kick (just a little bit). The cut kick is usually executed with the back leg. However, you can also kick with the the front leg.
  • Twist on the ball of your foot (standing leg), turn your hips, and kick the bottom of your opponent's standing leg. Both, extending the ankle and flexing the ankle is ok. If you flex your ankle, it's a bit harder for your opponent to escape once your foot is behind his heel, plus, you can kick lower (better momentum). When you extend your ankle, you usually put more power into the kick and it's also saver for your toes.
  • Make sure you keep your guard up. At the end of this video you can see where you hands should be. One hand should be extended towards the opponent. The other hand should protect the face. Also protect the back of your head with the shoulder of the extended arm. Don't let your shoulder hang.

Advice

  • Try to kick the back of your opponents standing leg (see first part of the video).
  • If your opponent is getting too close, you can push him down with your lead hand.
  • Apply this kick when your opponent leans forward or when he throws kick. The cut kick literally cuts your opponents action.
  • If you practice this with a training partner, make sure you practice with somebody who knows how to fall.
