how to do a Muay Thai Roundhouse Press Kick alias Down Roundhouse Kick. In Thai, this kick is called Te Kot เตะกด (Te = เตะ = Kick) (Kot = กด = Press). As you can see from its
name, the exact translation
is not Down Roundhouse Kick. Different muay thai schools teach the Te Kot differently. Some schools for example will teach you to press your kick into your opponent when he comes towards you. Other schools will teach you to press down the opponent's fighting stance at the hips, and that's why the Te Kot is sometimes also called Down Roundhouse Kick. However, The Down
Roundhouse Kick is also know as a kick from above to the opponent's neck. This requires a lot more flexibility and I will add another instruction for this. When you "press" you opponent's fighting stance down with a Press Kick, you pull your knee up a little higher than necessary and kick down just over your opponent's hip. Execution
Start from the muay thai fighting stance.
Lift you knee like if you were doing a normal muay thai roundhouse oblique kick (Te Chiang).
Then kick down into your opponent's hips.
To make sure you head stays protected, keep your lead hand on your head and extend the other arm behind the kicking leg. Don't separate the elbow of the lead arm from your rib cage too much. Also make sure you keep your chin down.
Fully extend your hips and kick with the bottom of your shin. Don't kick with the ankle.
The heel of the standing leg is elevated and the knee fully extended. Twist on the ball of the foot. When your shin impacts, your foot should point at least 45° away from your opponent.
Then pull back the same way and go back to your fighting stance. When you kick with the back leg, you have to pull your kicking leg all the way back again. Plant the kicking leg at the exact same spot where you started. Never let your kicking leg just fall where it goes. That would be bad technique.
