Sanda Side Kick Defense Techniques

This video shows a couple of sanda (chin. kickboxing) defense techniques against the side kick. The side kick is one of the most important kicks in sanda. Knowing how to defend against one, is just as important as knowing how to execute one. Click here for more Chinese kickboxing videos and don't forget to check out the animated sanda section.

Execution

  • The first two defense techniques shown in this video are left and right redirections of the kick with the lead arm. The side kick is a thrusted kick, so escaping to the side is the easiest way to get away. To make this technique more effective, push your opponents leg away with your forearm as you step to the side. Use your hips as you redirect your opponents kick with the forearm. If you get the timing right, you can actually unbalance your opponent, which will get you some extra time for a counter attack. Going towards your opponent's back is usually the better choice. BTW, for this one you have to work on your footwork.
  • Another option would be to grab your opponent's leg and apply a throw. If you want to grab the leg, hook your lead arm under your opponents ankle and put your back hand on top so that he can't pull his foot out. From there it is very easy to apply a throw. Of course you have to adjust your distance carefully when your opponent throws his kick.

Advice

  • If your opponent grabs your leg after a unsuccessful side kick, you can try to bend your knee. If you manage to get closer, you can try to counter with a punch. You can also try to bend your leg and then push your foot down. After a side kick you should always pull your leg back as fast and straight as possible.
