Sanda Front Hook Punch

This video shows how to do a hook punch with the front hand in sanda (chin. kickboxing). In Mandarin this is called "Qian Bai". "Qian" means front and the "Bai" stands for hook. The front hook punch is a horizontal punch where you go through your opponents defense from the side. Find more Chinese kickboxing techniques at sanda main.

Execution

  • Punch in a circular motion with your lead hand (front hand).
  • In order to put more power into your hook punch, lift your elbow so that your fist, your elbow and your shoulder are in a horizontal layer. Twist your hips and your knees and turn your upper body with the punch. Very important: Relax your shoulders.
  • Exhale as you punch.
  • Don't lower your guard. Keep your right fist close to your chin and keep your chin close to your chest.
  • At the beginning, you can practice your sanda front hook punch from your fighting stance (without extra steps) but you should get used to applying the front hook with a quick front step (Shang Bu). The left leg goes first and right leg follows.

Advice

  • Work on your sanda front hook punch in front of a mirror. Then work on a heavy bag and then with a training partner (with punching pads - see video)
  • The front hook punch is a short range punch. You can either apply it with a front step or when you opponent comes towards you.
  • Take boxing classes.
