Sanda Front Kick Video

This video shows how to do front kick in sanda (chin. kickboxing). In Mandarin the front kick is called "Zheng Deng Ti". This is the first kick every beginner should learn. Click here for more Chinese kickboxing videos and also don't forget to check out the animated sanda section.

Execution

  • Lift the knee of your front leg towards your chest and don't lower your guard.
  • Round you back a little and keep looking straight forward. Your knee is bent and your kicking foot is very close to your hip.
  • Then extend your kicking leg so that the foot moves forward in a straight line from the hip. Push your hips forward at the same time and exhale. The hip movement is very important, because it adds some extra power to your front kick.
  • Kick your opponent with the ball of your foot. (not the heel or the toes)
  • Protect your face. Don't forget to keep your fists up.
  • Bring your knee back to your chest as fast as possible (so that your opponent can't grab/throw you) and then go back to your sanda fighting stance.

Advice

  • The back leg front kick is a bit stronger, but harder to apply.
  • The front kick looks very simple, but coordinating hip and leg movement while kicking with the ball of the foot is harder than it looks.
  • Work on a heavy bag.
  • Remember to keep your fists up and exhale as you kick.
