Sanda Leg Hook Arm Sweep Throw

This video shows how to do a leg hook arm sweep throw in sanda (chin. kickboxing). This is the ideal grappling throw and you can apply it when you have your opponent's arm clamped between your arm and your rib cage. Most sanda fighters only practice one side of this throw. Being able to do both sides of this throw can be very beneficial. For more sanda videos click here.

Execution

  • This instruction is only for the left side of the leg hook arm sweep throw. For the right side of this technique, do the whole thing the other way around.
  • Before you even think about applying this throw, you should have your opponent in a good grappling position. Clamp your opponent's right arm between your left arm and your rib cage and put your right arm around his back like if you were going to a hip wheel. Pull him towards you and make sure you don't stand too high.
  • Then hook your right leg around his left knee (from the inside - see video).
  • And finally push him forward down and turn your upper body to the left. Look down to the floor at the same time. Actually watch his standing leg and coordinate your push with his leg movements. Timing is crucial at this point.

Advice

  • Ideally your opponent would make a small hop to the right after you hook your leg around his leg. Push him down to the left before he can gain balance again.
  • At the beginning you should only practice one side of this throw. Many advanced sanda fighters are able to do do both sides of this throw.
  • If your opponent wants to throw you with the sanda leg hook arm sweep throw, don't let him lift your left leg. Put as all your weight on your left leg.
