Wushu Empty Stance - Video Instruction
This video shows how to do a wushu empty stance (also called cat stance). In Chinese (Mandarin) this is called "Xu Bu" lit: Empty Stance. The empty stance is one of the 5 basic wushu stances. Once you know the 5 basic stances you should learn the 5 stances form. Also check out the animated wushu section or go back to wushu videos main.
Execution
- The empty stance is the most difficult basic wushu stance, because you have to hold all your weight on one leg (which is bent 90 degrees)
- This stance requires some calf flexibility and hamstring strength. If your calves are not flexible enough, you will not be able to perform a low empty stance without elevating your heel. BTW, elevating the heel of the standing leg is wrong technique.
- The front leg is slightly bent and the tip of the toe can touch the floor, but the front leg must not carry any weight.
- Keep your upper body straight and look straight forward.
- For a more detailed instruction check out the animated empty stance instruction.
Advice
- Stretch your calves and strengthen your thighs.
- Strength exercise: Try to do 10 to 20 empty stance squats. Make sure you don't help with the front leg.
- Learn the 5 stances form.
