Wushu Back Handspring Spotting - 2 Training Partners

This video shows how the back handspring is spotted traditionally in Chinese wushu. This is not the best spotting technique for the b-handspring, but you may give this try if you are scared of the 1-person spotting technique or if your training partners (spotters) can't do back handsprings themselves. For more information on the gymnastic back handspring, check out the animated back handspring instruction from the gymnastics section.

Execution

  • Have one spotter on each side.
  • Your left spotter grasps your pants and your shirt at the hips (with his right hand) and with his left hand he grasps your pants just above your knee. Both his hands point to the left.
  • Your right spotter does the whole thing the other way around.
  • Make sure you spotters don't stand too high. They should be able to spot your back handspring comfortably. Also make sure they don't put their back leg where you are going to land with your hands.
  • The first few times they should just help you bend back and go into a bridge.
  • Then they lift you into a gymnastic handstand and let you go from there.
  • Once all of you get used to this process, you can speed up a little. It usually takes a couple of weeks to learn the back handspring like this.

Advice

  • Take it easy. Don't try the back handspring without spotters too soon. Your spotters will know how long you need their help. Sometimes it takes a few days, sometimes it takes a few weeks or even months.
  • At the beginning you should use mats, or even better, soft foam pieces.
  • Always warm up. Run, warm up your wrists, stretch your shoulders and do a couple of bridges and gymnastic handstands.
  • Jump back and extend your knees. Don't bend you knees forward as you jump off. For more information on how to do a gymnastic back handspring, check out the animated gymnastic back handspring instruction.
  • In Chinese (Mandarin) the back handspring is called "Hou Shou Fan" (back hand wheel)
