How to Spot a Wushu Butterfly Twist

In this video lesson you will learn how spot a wushu butterfly twist. In Chinese (Mandarin) the butterfly twist is called "Xuan Zi Zhuan Ti". Learn the wushu b-kick (butterfly kick) before you try the b-twist, and don't try to spot anybody if you can't do a butterfly twist yourself. Click here for more wushu videos.

Execution

  • Stand on the left side of your student.
  • Grab your students' left hand with your left hand and his right hand with your right hand. The left hand has to be under the right hand.
  • Then run up to 3 steps on the side of your student and let him jump off from his left leg like if he was doing something in-between a wushu cartwheel without hands and a wushu butterfly kick. Since you are running hand in hand, it's impossible to do a proper butterfly runup. Just make sure your student jumps off from his left leg and that he swings his upper body down and then to the left. (see video)
  • Then pull his right hand up and align him with your left hand.
  • All he has to do is straighten and close his legs.
  • Make sure you don't twist him vertically and don't pull his right arm up too high. Initiate the twist between 45° and horizontal level. If you twist him vertically he will lose control and there is a 90% chance that you will injure his knee or ankle.
  • Release his left hand first and then his right hand.
  • Your student has to land on his left leg.
  • Check the trainer advice for additional information.

Advice

  • If you haven't spotted anybody before, try this: (but again, keep in mind that you shouldn't spot anybody if you can't to a wushu butterfly twist yourself)
    • Just do one step on the side of your student. Hold his hands like explained above.
    • Let him bend his upper body down and slightly to the left.
    • Then let him hop from the left leg and tell him to kick his right leg up. BTW, the right knee should NOT be bent.
    • Pull him a little bit so that he lands on his back. Since this is an exercise for both of you, let him land on a pile of soft mats.
    • Later you can try this faster and release his hands in mid-air. But use mats until you are sure you can spot your student.
  • It's YOUR responsibility to pull your student into the right direction. Don't injure our students' ankle or knee by pulling him vertically.
