Wushu Lotus Kick Video - Standing

This video shows how to do a standing lotus kick in wushu. In Chinese (Mandarin) this is called "Bai Tui". The standing lotus kick is usually landed in a horse stance position and there are a couple of variations of this jump. The easiest variation is the lotus kick 360 (full rotation). Everybody who is about to learn the wushu butterfly twist should also try the wushu lotus kick 540. The most difficult variation is the lotus kick 720, with 2 full rotations. A couple of years ago, wushu schools in China only taught the running lotus kick, which looked a lot better in my opinion. However, it was harder to add extra rotations and I guess that's why it's not that popular anymore. Execution

  • Step forward and strike out your arms from the left. Make sure you keep your upper body perfectly straight/vertical when you strike out and don't look down to the floor. Don't bend you knees too much and inhale as you strike out.
  • Jump off from both legs at once and keep your head & upper body straight. Jump straight up.
  • Then slap your right foot through your hands like if you were doing a wushu outside circle kick. The left leg can either remain aligned vertically (recommended for better balance) or be bent like if you were doing a flying wushu frontkick (this way the jump looks higher).
  • Then pull you right leg down even faster then you kicked and close your legs. For extra rotations you would also pull your hands to your chest.
  • Then land in a wushu horse stance, on both legs at the same time. Landing on the left leg first is wrong => failed attempt. Landing on the right leg first is ok if you really jumped off from both legs at the same time.

Advice

  • Keep your upper body aligned vertically.
  • Land at the same spot where you jumped off.
  • Warm up with the wushu outside circle kick.
