Wushu Whip Chain - Front Swing

Learn how to do a front swing with a wushu whip chain. This is one of the most basic whip chain techniques and you should learn it in one of your first training sessions. Technically the front swing with the whip chain is very similar to the front swing with a long wushu weapon (eg: wu hua movements). In Chinese Mandarin this swing is called "Zuo You Tui Hua". Execution

  • Stand with your right leg forward, hold your wushu whip in your right hand and swing it forward down on the right side of your body. Do a couple of empty circle on the right side before you turn to the left. Look straight forward and swing your whip chain as close as possible to you body. Don't swing too fast at the beginning.
  • Then swing your weapon under your right elbow and flex your arm. Your right hand (and the handle of your wushu whip) should stay pretty still. Don't move your hand and your arm too much.
  • Before your whip wraps around your flexed arm, turn to the left and open up again. Your whip should pass very close to your left leg. Turn your upper body with the movement.
  • Let you whip complete one full circle on the left side and then move your elbow forward, so that the chain goes over your arm and under your shoulder from the back of your arm.
  • Again, shortly before the weapon wraps around your arm, turn back to the left and start over.

Advice

  • Learn the empty circle swing and the left-right swing before you try this.
  • Keep your whip chain close to your body.
  • At the beginning you can try this with a tennis ball and a cord.
