Wushu Bian - Double Elbow Circle

This video shows how to do a double elbow circle with a wushu whip chain. In Chinese Mandarin, this wushu technique is called "Shuang Guai Zhou". This is actually one of the easiest whip chain skills. Before you try the double elbow circle, you should learn the left-right swing. For more wushu whip chain videos, click here. Also don't forget to check out the animated whip chain section.

Execution

  • Start from the left-right swing and keep your "Bian" (wushu whip chain) as close as possible to your body.
  • After a few circles, put your left hand over your right hand and swing your whip with both hands. Keep your elbows pretty close to your upper body and don't move your arms too wide.
  • Then lift your elbows a little and swing your chain under your right arm. Remember that you should always keep your wushu whip close to your body. That's why the chain should touch your arm closer to your shoulder than to your elbow. Also make sure your arms are fully flexed.
  • At the beginning you should not swing your weapon too fast. Before the chain wraps around your bent arm, turn to the left and let go (see video).
  • The first time you try this, only use your right arm. Later you should go from left to right like shown in the video.

Advice

  • If you are a beginner, it's ok if you don't walk while doing the double elbow circle. Once you are comfortable with the whole movement, step forward every time you change from one side to the other. For example: You swing your wushu whip under your right arm, and step forward with your right foot as you turn to the left.
  • Don't forget to attach the flags.
  • If you are afraid of hitting yourself, use a tennis ball on a cord instead of a metal wushu whip.
  • Start slowly and speed up once you feel comfortable with this technique.
