This video shows how to do a wushu empty stance (Xu Bu) with a whip chain catch. This element is often performed at the end of a "Duan" (section/part of a wushu form). In Chinese Mandarin, this technique is called "Xu Bu Liang Bian". Before you try this, you should practice all the basic swings and of course the basic wushu stances. Execution
Stand with your right leg forward and swing your wushu whip chain forward down. Keep your whip close to your body and look straight forward.
Then move your left leg to the middle, and swing your whip under your right shoulder.
At the same time, move your left forearm in front of your chest and open your left hand.
Your whip chain has to cross your back and come back down over your left shoulder (not your right shoulder). Keep in mind that your whip should come down pretty straight. Don't start swinging sideways. BTW, at this point you can look down slightly to the right. Don't look up or to the left.
Then bend your right leg and go into a wushu empty stance. At the same time, the last, or last two sections of your wushu whip, should fall into your hand. The bottom of your palm should point forward down and the the left elbow should be bent less than 90°.
Turn your head forward as the last section of your whip touches the inside of your palm. Your empty stance should be completed by now. No more movement please. Look straight forward over your left hand. Don't look down to your whip.
Advice
Don't swing your wushu whip too fast at the beginning.
You actually never have to swing your whip very fast. Slow down at the and and don't smash your weapon into your hand. The head turn and the way how you move into the wushu empty stance are what make this movement look flashy.
Try this with a tennis ball on a cord if you are afraid of injuring yourself.
Swing your wushu whip as straight/vertical as possible.
Always do a right empty stance and catch your whip with your left hand.
Don't close your hand as you catch the whip. Let the last section bounce off the inside of your palm.
