Wushu Forearm Whip Turn

This video shows how to do a forearm whip turn with a wushu whip chain. In Chinese Mandarin, this technique is called "Da Bi Bei Bian" (lit: Forearm Back Whip). You basically wind your wushu whip around your left forearm, turn to the left, then swing it over your back and keep turning until you are back to where you came from. Execution

  • Start from the left/right swing or the empty circle swing and keep your wushu whip close to your body. Stand with your left leg forward.
  • Then extend your left arm to the right, and swing your whip chain over your forearm.
  • When the chain points straight back, step forward with your right leg and turn to the left. That's when you redirect from the left side of your body to the right side of your body.
  • At this point, your wushu whip will automatically unwrap from your forearm.
  • Swing your whip over your right shoulder and finish the movement with a turning back circle. "Zhuan Shen Bei Bian". "Zuan Shen" means to turn the body and "Bei Bian" is the part where you swing your whip back over your right shoulder (just before the turn).

Advice

  • At the beginning, you should not swing your wushu whip too fast.
  • The first time you try this, only do the forearm wind followed by a few empty circles. Practice the turning back circle apart.
  • If you are afraid of hitting yourself, try this with a cord and a tennis ball first.
  • Please don't forget to attach the flags to your wushu whip.
