Cartwheel without Hands - Wushu
The cartwheel whithout hands, also
known as cartwheel roll, aerial or in chinese "ce kong fan" is
a cartwheel wher your hands don't
touch the ground. Cartwheel rolls are always performed from the left
leg and landed on the right. This is one of the easier wushu jumping
techniques and can be learned after you can do a quick straight gymnastic cartwheel with
hands and the flying frontkick.
There is also a more difficult version of this move: The cartwheel
roll twist 360, a cartwheel with a full clockwise rotation. Try the
wushu cartwheel without hands into a soft sand pit and not into mats.
Technical description: Cartwheel without Hands - Wushu
- Run forward and make a hop on your right leg while you swing your left leg forward.
- The right foot from which you hopped lands on its toes and a mili second later you land with your left foot. The left foot is placed about 2 ft in front of your right foot and its heel touches at first. At the same time your arms should be brought in front of you. The arms are about vertical and the upper body also leans quite far forward. The way how wushu artists bring their arms forward differ from athlet to athlete. At the beginning its the easies to run with the arms up already, some athletes move tham sideways up or forward during their last few steps and the very best ones, with a high level of jumping stength, throw them up from the hip just before they jump off, to glide up before they turn over very flashy.
- However... Swing up your right leg as high and move your hands toward your body to rotate after your left leg leaves the ground.
- Land on your right leg and then on your left. After your landing you should look to the place where you came from. All your steps should be in one line and you footprints should not be twisted to this line at all.
Trainer advice: Cartwheel without Hands - Wushu
- Do cartwheels, lots of cartwheel, cartwheels with one hand, cartwheels on the sport, cartwheels in a row etc. etc. etc.
- When you try to learn the cartwheel without hands from the one-handed cartwheel, put down your left hand
( if you jump from your left leg ! ) Try to touch the floor shortly before you land.
Why the left hand:
1)
This will help you keep your cartwheel straight. ( also do a couple of those if you land facing the wrong direction )
2) The right arm needs to be free, becasue its swing contributes a bit more to the technique.
- Nerver try a cartwheel without hands on a mat. The wushu jumps are much easier and safer to lern in sand. I know many people who tried cartwheel without hands on judo mats. Those who tried it with socks slipped and fell down badly and the other ones had the problem that their landing foot was like glued to the mat. Some twisted out thir ankles badly.
Believe me, sand is the best.
- The easiest way to learn a cartwheel without hands is to jump into a sandpit with a bump at its edge to the sand. This bumb should be between 10 and 25 cm high and look like a wave. The bumb helps you to go higher, also because as you can take more power out of your calfs. Jump as high as possible and put your hands down as late as posible. After a while you will be able to land like a cat on your hands and your right leg at the same time.
- The further your legs are spreaded, the less you have to jump. Lets say your right leg already points straight up, when your left leg loses floor contact. That would be a split, and in succession you would only have to turn over 180 more degrees.
If your legs would stick together when you jump from your left leg, you would have to rotate 360 degrees. Nobody can do this from one leg. Its your job is to find your personal mean between jumping strength and flexibility.
- When you are very good at the cartwheel without hands, you can try to swing your hands forward while you take off and twist over very later.
- Also try the cartwheel without hands with weapons.
- Build jumping strength for the cartwheel without hands with frog jumpsand switch-leg jumps
