- Years ago ephedrine was widely used as an asthma treatment.
- At that time same time many athletes claimed to have asthma, to get access to the drug. In traditional Chinese medicine ephedrine, which was extracted from the plant ma huang, (that's where the name "ma huang su" comes from) was used as a treatment for asthma and bronchitis for hundreds of years. A couple of years ago more effective medications with less side effects replaced ephedrine. However, Ephedrine is still widely used as a sports drug.
