Wushu Staff Smash

Wushu Staff Smash

In this lesson you will learn how to do a wushu staff smash (shuai gun). The staff smash is a very basic staff technique seen in almost every modern wushu staff form. You basically jump into a wushu flat stance and smash the staff flat onto the floor at the same time. Speed and timing are similar to the smash punch. Find more wushu staff techniques at staff main.

Execution

  • Stand on your right leg and hold your wushu staff behind your back (aligned vertically). Hold the end of the staff (thick end) with your right hand. Look straight forward and raise your left knee a bit over hip level.
  • Swing the staff forward down (over head) and start going into a left sided flat stance. Twist 90° on the ball of your right foot. Keep looking straight forward. At the same time change the grip of your left hand, so that no fingers are under the staff. (unless you want to injure your fingers) Press down the staff with the flat palm.
  • Smash the staff flat onto the floor and go into a left flat stance.
    See wushu flat stance lesson.
  • The right hand pulls the end of the staff slightly up. Actually stop the right hand an inch before you would punch into the floor. The left hand pushs the "middle" of the staff down. (creates the slap) Make sure no fingers are under the staff and keep looking straight forward.

Advice

  • The wushu staff smash is a very fast and loud technique.
  • This technique is usually performed from a jump, but I recommend you first learn it from a standing position.
  • There is only one side of this technique. Both, left and right handed athletes should do the flat staff slap with a left sided flat stance.
