Butterfly Kick - Wushu

The butterfly or butterfly-kick is the easiest out of the wushu jump kicks. Its easier than the other jumps because you dont have to turn all the way around or land on the same leg you jumped from. So this move doesnt require that much of athletism. You can try this technique right after you learned the basic kicks and the sweep ( one of your first training sessions ). Butterfly kicks can be performed in a combination or as single techniques. In competitions, butterfly kicks dont count much, but are still performed by many good athletes, because they look really cool if performed properly.

Technical description: Butterfly Kick - Wushu

  • How to run into a butterfly kick
Stand on your right foot while the left toe touches the floor about one ft in front of the right toe. The left arm and the left palm point straight up. Fingertips of the left hand point to your right.
The right arm points to your right side (horizontal) and the right hands makes a fist.
(Thumb up) Look to your right side. ( chin over your right shoulder )
You look to your right side at the beginning, but you are going to run to the left side.
  • Let your left hand sink down in front of your eyes, ( right side ) while your left leg
strikes out for a big step.
  • Step on your left leg and then on your right leg in kida circular motions. Your arms are and stay quite opened to keep the balance.
  • You just stepped on your right leg and now comes the most important step of the butterfly run up. Make a small hop on your right foot, while your arms go to your right and your left leg makes one last big step backwards. This step is to build up some tension in your torso, which you can use when you take off.
  • When you land on your both legs after the hop, your upper body and the left arm point to where you came from, and your right arm points to your right. Your feet should be about 3 ft apart and stanse should kinda look like a bowstance.
  • Now swing both arms and your upper body down and forward, while your right stance bow stance changes into a horse stance, and the horse stance changes into a left bowstance. You have to swing your upper body really low. I mean your head has to be about one foot over ground for a moment. All this has to happen very fast.
  • As your head comes up again and all your weight goes to your left leg, you let your right leg go up. No matter if you wanna do butterfly kick or a butterfly twist, the swining leg has to stay pretty straight
  • Thats the end of the butterfly run up and the beginning of a butterfly kick or twist.
  • The Butterfly kick (xuan zi)
  • Swing up your right straightened leg over horizontal level, open your arms as far as possible,
as if they were your wings and look forward vertical. Always think of this 3 thinks when you perform a butterfly kick. The arms are opened to avoid uncontrolled rotation.
  • After your right leg left the floor, the left leg leaves. The left leg also has to go over horizontal level, so the hip has to be the lowest point of you body for a moment. (Heels and head highest. Keep your feet and hands apart, or you will lose controll.
  • Land on your right foot at first and then on your left one. The landing postion should be similar to the bow stance position after the hop, so that you could to another butterfly kick without run up.

Trainer advice: Butterfly Kick - Wushu

  • Watch butterfly kick vids.
  • If you dont go low enough with your head at the butterfly run up, you will not be able to perform the jump at a horizontal level.
Its safer to do a straighter butterfly kick at the beginning, but this doesn`t work with the butterfly twist.
  • Go into the bow stance after the hop and swing down your upper body as if you were jumping into a butterfly kick.
(Bowstance with right leg bent, left arm forward, right arm to your right)
Swing up your upper body and your right leg, open your arms, but dot jump from your left leg.
Try to circle at least 360° on your left leg and later try it with a little hop from your left foot.
This is just a balancing exercise for the butterfly kick.
  • Try butterfly combos. (More than 2 butterfly kicks in a row without steps in between)
  • Try a butterfly combo with a butterfly twist at at the end
  • Try to combine a butterfly kick with a front sweep or other wushu jumps.
  • Build jumping strength for the butterfly kick with Frog Jumps
