Lotus Kick - Wushu
The lotus kick is also known as
outside spinkick, split spinkick or ( in chinese ): "teng kong bai
lian " This jump is very typical for chinese wushu, and can be learn
after one can do the flying
frontkick and the cartwheel
without hands and the whirlwind
kick. The lotus kick is jumped from the right leg. It follows a
360° clockwise
rotation with an outward
snapkick in the air, after which the technique is landed on the
rigth or both legs. ( jump, landing and kick are done with the same leg ).
A lotus
kick can also be done with 2 full rotations, but this is seen very
seldom, because its hard to combine with other techniques.
Technical description: Lotus Kick - Wushu
- The lotus kick run up.
!!! First of all note that the lotus kick - run up is a clockwise spiral. !!!
Stand on your right leg and touch the gound with the toe of your left foot in front.
The left palm points straight forward and the right crane backward. The backhand is a bit higher then shoulder level and the fronthand is a bit liwer.
- Make a big step with your left leg and then a step with your right.
- From your right leg you hop up and lift your left knee. (calf vertical)
While your left knee is up, you put your left palm straight back and your right palm up. Look back to your laft palm for a moment and land on the right leg again. That's the leg from which you hopped.
- Step left.
- Step right and jump off. The last step is twisted a bit more clockwise.
- The lotus kick itsself is similar to the flying frontkick. Throw up the swinging leg the same way you do it for the flying frontkick. The only difference is that you have to initiate a rotation now.
- Do an outward circle sncpkick in the air an land on the right or both legs.
If you wanna band the swinging leg in mid-air like at the flying frontkick, or if you spread it straight away, (Air splits) depends on you. The bend version is easier to rotate, but the split version looks way cooler.
Trainer advice: Lotus Kick - Wushu
- Stretch the side splits for the lotus kick.
- Learn the standing lotus kick first. ( without runup - jumping from both feet together )
- Jump into a sand pit over a spring board or a bump.
- When you first learn the lotos kick, use the same exercises you uses for the flying frontkick. Its all about swinging the leg up prperly. Only make sure you initiate a 360 degrees rotation and land on both legs at the same time. You not necesary have to land on your right while learning the lotus kick, but never ever land on your left. Both legs together is ok.
- Do frog jumps to build jumping strength for the lotus kick.
