Is there an age limit at Song Jiang Wushu School ?

No, students of all ages and ethnic groups are welcome. The best age to learn modern wushu though is between 6 and 22 years. However, that doesn't mean that you can't reach an amazing level if you are older. The best requirement if you start late is gymnastics, tricking, capoeira or rhythmic gymnastics background. Professional wushu athletes train at least 5 years (and that's very fast) before they can be top athletes. I have met some gymnasts and trickers who could already do some flips before they did wushu and it took them only 1 to 2 years to become really good. Others did wushu for 15 years (since they were 8) and didn't even learn the cartwheel without hands. It depends a lot on the coach and the environment. Also check out our wushu section if you want to get ready.

More: Wushu in China - Age Limit

  • Song Jiang is a modern school, so it is better for people who are interested in competitions and modern styles. Elder people are usually not interested in competitions, so the training at Song Jiang would be ridiculous for them. I wouldn't recommend a 40 year old who is interested in Wing Chun, Taiji and Xing Yi to go to a school where a few thousand students do plyometric exercises in the morning. But on the other hand I know somebody who is 56 and currently works on his whirlwind kick and the butterfly kick. It's all up to you. As I said, Song Jiang is a modern school and they will welcome you, no matter how old you are. But you have to decide on your own if you want to go there.

Advice: Wushu in China - Age Limit

  • They will accept you, but will you accept being taught by a little school kid. All the classes have young students and elder students. So if you are a beginner and have to learn something new, your coach will often send you with one of the youngest students or and injured to practice apart from the class.
  • If you want to work out with a private coach, your age doesn't matter at all. Some people might look at you if you are 6 ft tall and work out with a 4 ft kid. Then, if you try something over and over again and it looks pathetic when you can't to something, they might even laugh at you. But that's the price you will have to pay if you o to China to learn wushu. If you have a strong character and a strong will, all this will not matter.
  • If you are not interested in modern (acrobatic ) wushu training and also don't want to work out in the middle of nowhere, you shouldn't go to Song Jiang Wushu School. There are also schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Shaolin.
