Wushu Spear
The spear ( qiang ) is a modern wushu weapon, but there are also traditional
spear forms.
Athletes who practice the spear usually also practice straightsword.
Since 2001 those two disciplines are mainly performed by women. Because wushu planned to became an olympic event, the international
wushu committee said that women will have to compete in straightsword, spear and taiji, while men compete in broadsword,
staff and nanquan. The reason for this decision was that broadsword and staff forms have
rude movements and require a bulkier physique. And straightsword and spear require more flexibility and round movements. Most women preferred spear and straightsword anyway.
