Description: Osteoporosis

  • Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones where the bone mineral density (BMD) reduces.
The micro-architecture of the bone is disrupted, the amount and variety of non collagenous proteins is altered and the bones become fragile. In an advanced stage of osteoporosis a bone can break from something as simple as a muscle contraction. Your bone density reaches its peak at around 20 years. If your bone density decreases to a level 2.5 times below this peak bone mass density (PBM), this condition is called osteoporosis (osteoporosis means = fragile structure). If your BMD is 1 to 2.5 times below the average PBM of your gender, you are diagnosed Osteopenia. That just means that you are below average and that you should change your life style. But you don't have to be afraid to break your wrist the next time somebody wants to shake your hand. Women are at a higher risk than men, especially after their menopause. This is because of the hormonal changes. The average "Peak Bone Mass Density" PBM of a women is lower than the average PBM of a man. Strange diets a lot of girls make at this age usually increases the risk. Smokers and people in hormonal medication are at additional risk. Bones that break easiest with osteoporosis: Hip, Wrist, Vertebral column
