Gymnastics - Double Back Flip

In this lesson, you will learn how to perform a double back flip in artistic gymnastics. You should be proficient in all the basic gymnastics flips before attempting the double back flip.

I recommend starting by jumping from a 1-meter springboard into water, then practicing on a trampoline. Do not attempt the double back flip without supervision from an experienced gymnastics coach.

You can find more gymnastics instructions in the Artistic Gymnastics main section.

Execution

To learn the double back flip, set up mats and a mini-trampoline as shown in the illustration.

  • Begin with a handstand and bounce on the trampoline a few times, keeping your abdominals tight.
  • Next, perform a back flip landing on top of the mats, followed immediately by a back roll.
  • Practice until you can perform the back flip to back roll without touching the top of the mat pile.
  • Once confident, try performing the double back flip.

Advice

  • The mini-trampoline training method described here is one of the best ways to learn the double back flip.
  • Also consider jumping from a 1-meter springboard into water as part of your training.
  • Another method is jumping from a tumbling track into a foam pit filled with foam cubes.
  • Warm up and stretch thoroughly before attempting difficult flips like this.
  • Start by practicing only the tucked double back flip.
