How to do an Obi Otoshi - Judo Belt Drop

An Obi Otoshi (Obi Otoshi = Belt Drop) is a judo throw where you grab your opponent’s belt with one hand and wrap your other hand around their waist. Then you unbalance them by lifting them about 45°. Find more judo throws at Judo Main.

Description: Obi Otoshi – Judo Belt Drop

  • Grab your opponent’s belt so that you are chest to chest.
  • Pass your other hand in front of their abdomen so that your back is against their chest.
  • Wrap your hand around their waist.
  • Pull them up at a 45-degree angle, using your legs and arms to make them fall.

Trainer Advice: Obi Otoshi – Judo Belt Drop

  • Practice the Obi Otoshi on mats.
  • Don’t throw anyone who has no martial arts experience at all.
