Learn Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art, game, and dance developed by Africans enslaved in Brazil during the 17th century. Capoeira practitioners stand in a circle (roda) and take turns playing music and sparring. In the Capoeira video section, you can also find some video instructions.

Style description: Capoeira

Sparring includes groundwork to the music, kicks, different strikes, sweeps, throws, escaping techniques, and difficult acrobatics (flips, etc.).

The players have to fight to the rhythm ("Toque") without stopping.
The instruments used to play the music are called: Berimbau, Atabaque, and Pandeiro.

There are 3 different Capoeira styles:

  • Capoeira Angola (Mestre Pastinha – more traditional)
  • Capoeira Regional (Mestre Bimba)
  • Capoeira Contemporânea (competitive – similar to Wushu “Dui Da” competitions, not like contact sports)
