Monkey Style (Hou Quan) is a traditional Wushu style in which the performer imitates the movements and behavior of a monkey or ape. This style incorporates numerous acrobatic techniques and quick, erratic hopping motions. It is considered one of the most visually captivating Wushu styles and is a highlight of many Shaolin demonstrations.
There are several variations of Monkey Style, such as Monkey Staff and Drunken Monkey.
Monkey Style is characterized by quick hand movements, low stances, and fast, agile jumps.
Fun fact: many unconventional and tricky techniques—including eye strikes and other deceptive moves—can be found in Monkey Style.
Techniques from Ditang Quan (Ground Tumbling Fist) are very useful when learning Monkey Style, as they help build the flexibility and agility required.
