Chinese people have a sense of national pride like I have never seen anywhere else. Of course, there is racism in China, just like in every other country, but it’s not something you need to be afraid of when walking around alone. Click here for more information about wushu training in China.
More: Racism in China
Some people might call you “Da Bi Zi” (big nose) or “Yang Gui Zi” (foreign devil). But to be honest, the most racist place I have ever been to is my own country: Austria. I mean, nobody in China will scream “F*** YOU” at you just because your skin has a different color. Nobody really cares about your religion either; people are usually more interested in different ideas and ways of thinking.
Most people will be friendly as long as you are friendly and don’t touch their national pride. They might laugh at you because you wear a funny hat, or when you try something over and over again and it just looks pathetic. But this kind of racism is not dangerous and can actually make your character a bit stronger. You have to take it with humor and not get pissed off just because some Chinese people don’t know how to treat a foreigner. After all, many of the students at Song Jiang are very young and have never seen a foreigner before.
Many people will stare at you for at least the first two or three weeks, and when you walk around, people will call you “Lao Wai” (foreigner), unless you are Asian.
Advice: Racism in China
Don’t touch their national pride. If you say something against China, everybody will know about it within a day. Especially young people have very strong trust in their country. Some older people I got to know have different views, but they rarely share them with foreigners.
Don’t get pissed off if people stare at you, point at you from far away, or shout “Lao Wai” (foreigner). Some people will call you “foreigner” as if it were your name.
The situation is different in big cities and places with a lot of tourism. In Yun Cheng, you don’t have to be afraid of walking alone, but in places like Hong Kong or Shanghai, there are some streets you shouldn’t enter alone.
I have been to many countries and not just for a few weeks. In my opinion, China is not a very racist country, but the fact that so many people stare at you and sometimes laugh for no obvious reason can make you feel a bit uncomfortable. For example, many Chinese people will argue that the Chinese race is the most intelligent and the most beautiful. Avoid discussions like that.
