An uppercut is a technique where you punch upward toward your opponent’s chin. Uppercuts are found in many martial arts styles, such as Western boxing, karate, or Sanda. In Chinese kickboxing (Sanda), the front-hand uppercut is called “Qian Gou.” For more Sanda techniques, visit Sanda Main.
Description: Fronthand Uppercut – Sanda
- Strike out: Don’t extend your punch too far. Your opponent should not anticipate the next move.
- As you strike, bring your back hand slightly closer to your face to protect against incoming attacks.
- Lower your legs slightly and crouch your back a little.
- Punch upward, stand slightly, and lean forward to increase speed, reach, and power.
- Lift your shoulder approximately 1 inch to make the punch more powerful. At the same time, the elevated shoulder helps protect you from hooks coming from the left side.
Trainer Advice: Fronthand Uppercut – Sanda
- Lifting the shoulder at the right moment can significantly increase the power of your uppercut.
- Do not attempt an uppercut on someone without a mouthguard or boxing gloves.
