How to do a Back Walkover

In this lesson, you will learn how to do a gymnastic back walkover. The back walkover is usually practiced by girls, as it requires a lot of back and shoulder flexibility, and is a common skill on the balance beam. Before attempting this move, you should be able to bend backward into a bridge from a standing position.

Execution

Start by bending backward into a bridge (see Bending Back into a Bridge instructions). Just before your hands touch the floor, lift one leg into the air. If balancing this way is difficult (since you’re essentially bending back on one leg), finish the bridge with both feet on the floor. Pause for a moment, then kick one leg up into the air.

Keep your legs as far apart as possible and fully extend both knees. Your elbows should also remain straight throughout the movement.

The middle of the back walkover is similar to a handstand in a front split position. Lower one leg to the ground while looking at your hands. Then align your second leg with your torso and arms as it comes down.

Finish the movement in the same upright position you started in, with your arms raised overhead.

Advice

  • Most people find it easier to kick up the left leg first.
  • Just like learning to bend back into a bridge, you can also practice the back walkover with the help of spotters.
  • Once you can do a back walkover, it will be easier to learn the gymnastic back handspring.

Training Tip:
Practice your bridge with your feet elevated on a platform. This places your hands lower than your feet, making it easier to kick your legs over.
