The hip wheel is a throwing technique in which you grab your opponent and throw them over your back by lifting with your hip. Because Sanda practitioners wear boxing gloves, the execution of the hip wheel is slightly different, as you cannot use your hands to grip your opponent in the usual way.
Description: Sanda Hip Wheel
(For right-handed Sanda practitioners)
- Step forward with your right leg and loop your left arm around your opponent’s right arm. This helps you position yourself, and your opponent will not be able to punch you while you prepare the throw.
- Wrap your right arm around their neck and follow with your left foot while twisting on your right foot (turning left).
- Your toes should point away from your opponent, heels planted on the ground, and knees slightly bent. Keep their trunk close to your back.
- To lift and throw your opponent over, raise your heels, straighten your legs, and pull their trunk forward and down.
- Keep your eyes on your own feet as your opponent falls.
Trainer Advice: Sanda Hip Wheel
