In this lesson you will learn how to skip forward while maintaining a Muay Thai fighting stance. Before you learn how to move back and forth, you should work on your fighting stance without footwork. Start with the forward skip, then learn the back skip, and finally the side escapes. Once you feel comfortable with Muay Thai footwork, start practicing the basic kicks and punches. Description: Skipping Forward – Muay Thai Footwork
Start from your fighting stance, with your fists up, chin close to your chest, and your back slightly rounded. Look straight forward and stand on the balls of your feet. Don’t elevate your heels too much. Some people perform their fighting stance with both heels on the floor; however, the balls of your feet should carry most of your weight. For more info, check the fighting stance lesson.
When you skip forward, always move the front leg first. If you start with the back leg, you will make your stance smaller, which makes it easier for your opponent to unbalance you. Don’t raise the foot too much. Just lift the ball of the foot slightly so you can move forward (about 1–2 cm, or 0.5–1 inch). Your upper body remains vertical, and your fists don’t move. Don’t lift your head as you skip forward. Don’t jump. Don’t make yourself taller. Don’t bend forward or backward. Your hips carry your trunk like a buoy.
The back foot follows shortly before you plant the front foot. Don’t pull your back leg too close to the front leg. At the end of each step, the distance between your legs should be exactly the same as at the beginning.
Do a few steps in a row. Work on your timing.
