The L-Kick

In this lesson, you will learn how to do an L-Kick. The L-Kick is a movement originating from Capoeira and is often seen in breakdancing and contemporary dance forms. In Portuguese, this is called “Au Batido.” You basically start as if you were doing a cartwheel but then stop your hips and extend your legs further. Ideally, one leg points straight up while the other moves close to your head. Before attempting the Capoeira L-Kick, you should be able to hold a handstand for at least 5 seconds. For more breakdance instruction, go back to Breakdance Main or check the Capoeira section.

Instruction

  • Place your hands close to your feet.
  • Don’t swing up too hard at the beginning. Gain height gradually, step by step.
  • When in the FREEZE (stop or turn back) position, grab your straight leg or let the free arm point straight up. The other leg should be bent.
  • Snap back quickly so that you actually land higher than you started, or jump directly into the toprock.

Advice

  • Warm up your shoulders.
  • Don’t attempt this if you cannot hold a handstand for at least 10 seconds.
