Gymnastic Back Handspring Stepout

The back handspring stepout is essentially a back handspring where you split your legs in the air and land on one leg first. It is similar to the gymnastic back walkover in appearance.
Back walkovers and back handsprings are most commonly seen in women’s gymnastics.

Execution

Start by jumping off both legs at the same time, just like in a regular back handspring.

Once both legs are off the ground, split your legs in the air without bending your knees.
If you normally do cartwheels starting with your left leg, then extend your left leg first.

Open your legs as wide as possible during the split.

Land on one leg first, raise your arms, and look straight ahead.

Advice

  • Master the regular back handspring before attempting the stepout version.
  • When learning, avoid splitting your legs too wide at first.
  • Don’t split your legs too early—make sure you push off both feet at the same time before initiating the split.

Exercise:
Combine the back handspring stepout with other movements like cartwheels, handsprings, handstands, rolls, and more.
